And now for a bit of whimsy: the folks at Savvy headquarters have asked all us city content editors to put together an "ABCs" of being a kid in our town. Here's my contribution to the cause... enjoy!

A San Francisco Kid's ABCs

A's the Academy, a museum with penguins and sharking
B is for the bison you run into while looking for parking

C means Crissy Field where my daughter likes to skinny dip
D is downtown; even our panhandlers are fancy and somewhat hip

E's the eucalyptus, an invasive tree that falls down on our heads a lot
F is Fisherman's Wharf, tacky but a great seafood noshing spot

G is the Golden Gate, our nice bridge that's also quite pointy
H means the Haight, once gritty but now hoity-tointy

I is an ice cream at Maggie's, or a shake, or one of each
J is the Judah, a streetcar for the Sunset and Ocean Beach

K's those cool kites on Marina Green, colorful and peripatetic
L is for Lombard Street which I love even if touristy -- I'm pathetic!

M is for MUNI, and how we love riding to see the sights
N is for North Beach -- teach your kid to be a beatnik at City Lights
 
O is the Ocean, so cold here you'd never find Hasselhoff
P's Pier 39: sea lions fight like they're crazed but then laugh it off

Q honors queer parents who set all an example
R is red wine that flows here quite ample

S is the seasons, we do have them despite eastern protests
T's the tranny who makes lattes the foamiest and bestest

U is Union Square, shoppers' paradise if you're into that kind of thing
V is the Vespas eternally ridden by our transient 20-somethings

W is surprising park windmills -- the last thing that your kid expects
X is for xylophone, unrelated to San Fran but it starts with X

Y is Yerba Buena, which is how we were known before
Z is the Zoo: let's finish by feeding the goats we all adore
