Fern's Favorite Funny Kids Books
November 18, 2008
Whenever my near-three-year old daughter Fern (or anyone else, for that
matter) tells me that I'm funny, my stock response is: "Funny-'ha, ha'
or funny-weird?" Because there are two distinct "funnies" and though my
preference is by far the latter -- funny-weird, as in "What a funny outfit your daughter is wearing today!" -- I think both deserve their spot in the sun.
So when the folks at Savvy National
asked us to come up with a few "funny" kids' books, the collected works
of Roald Dahl came immediately to mind (especially the
pro-pheasant-poaching Danny, Champion of the World) or clever but quirky masterpieces like Flotsam, a wordless adventure of a boy, a one-hour photo shop, and a hallucinating camera.
But if by "funny" you mean "books with a good belly laugh," then my daughter would pick a different set:
- Good Night, Gorilla, in which a gorilla terrorizes a suburban zoo and hilarity ensues;
- Go Dog, Go; the funny bits are the constant trashing of that poor poodle's hat choices;
- Officer Buckle and Gloria, which proves making funny faces behind the backs of hapless police offices is a really good idea and gets you ice cream;
- Kirby, the Easter Dog, in which I don't really see the humor, although Fern seems to think that a Labrador wearing bunny ears and looking for eggs under various farm animals is worthy of much laughter.
Those are Fern's favorite funnies -- how about your little ones? Got any belly-laughing board books to share?
