A Moment for Reflection

January 13, 2009

The folks at Savvy headquarters asked us to take a few minutes today to ponder an esoteric question: "What's the best place for kids to see their reflection in San Francisco?"

I'd never pondered this before, but here are my nominees:

  • The San Francisco Zoo. A bit of a dark horse, but there's an art installation (I think it's just called "The Mound" or some such) where my daughter Fern has spent some of her happiest moments at the zoo. And, among the frog statues and animal-based cryptograms, there are two distorting mirrors that she thinks are just dandy. It's located directly ahead of the main entrance, across from the Leaping Lemur cafe.
  • Yerba Buena Gardens. The reflecting pool above the Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial is a mellow spot, a great perch for a picnic either before or after a day at the playground or ice rink -- orĀ Zeum, even.
  • The Exploratorium. Reflection is their specialty; one exhibit reflects your face and then turns it, while another lets you reflect half your body, giving the illusion that when you lift one leg you're hovering off the ground. Don't miss the duck-in kaleidoscope, as well.

That's what comes to me off the top of my head -- how about you? Any favorite "reflective" spots?
