99 Things to Do in San Francisco Before Kindergarten: The Full List

January 02, 2009

One of my great accomplishments last year was to finish this enormous list of things I think every San Francisco kid should do before the age of 6 or so. The range is vast and yet I'm sure I'm leaving quite a bit off, all the same. Since we originally posted in ten parts, I'm going to reprise the entire list here, complete with check boxes so you can keep track of your progress. (There's  Read more...

Museumette: Crissy Field Center -- Or, "Wilderness Survival for Toddlers"

December 11, 2008

In another of my series of visits to San Francisco's tiny but kid-friendly museums, today we drop by the Crissy Field Center down on the bayshore road on the Presidio's edge. It's the National Park Service interpretive center, and you can visit any day -- there's a little cafe and a couple of exhibits -- but the way to really get involved is to go to one of the center's frequent kid-oriented  Read more...

Museumette: Conservatory of Flowers

November 13, 2008

Museumette: Conservatory of Flowers In another of my continuing series on San Francisco's small museums, this week I cover the Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park. It's a compact building, but it's got enough interesting flora to make it worth the $5 and an hour or so. The eastern room, in particular, with its huge water feature, fake mangrove roots that easily  Read more...

Gardening in the Rain

November 05, 2008

We're in that glorious period where the rain has started but it's still light and relatively warm enough to get out there and start planting with your kids. Rain means mud, and mud means some fun digging. Here are three opportunities for your budding gardeners: 1. Go native. If you can make it, the local chapter of the California Native Plant Society has their annual plant sale tomorrow  Read more...

99 Things to Do In San Francisco Before Kindergarten, Part 4: Food!

November 03, 2008

San Francisco is a foodie town, so it makes sense that we should spend the first few years of our kids' lives indoctrinating them into our ways. For this installment of the San Francisco "top 99," I'm going to focus on some food experiences you should try to have with your preschool kids. I'm leaving out a thousand restaurants, of course -- feel free to school me down in the comments! 31.  Read more...

Museumette: Model Trains at the Randall Museum

October 16, 2008

After a certain age, model trains ceases to be called "playing" and turns into a "hobby," and so it is for the members of the Golden Gate Model Railroad Club. I've never had the patience to actually do any model railroad construction, but I find it fascinating to watch, so Fern and I occasionally check out the club's open hours, Saturday mornings at the Randall Museum. At  Read more...

Weekend Outlook: October 18th and 19th

October 15, 2008

Weekend Outlook: October 18th and 19th Check out these fun, family-friendly activities for this weekend: One of the main reasons I wanted kids was to be able to tag along on field trips -- but I'm getting impatient waiting for my toddler finally to go to school so I can partake of her outing bounty. Imagine my excitement, therefore, to learn that on Saturday, Strybing Arboretum  Read more...

4 Gardening Activities to Do With Your Kids This Fall

October 10, 2008

One of my two-year old daughter's favorite pastimes is gardening. She loves to dig, find bugs, run through the sprinkler, and pick berries, but I've been hard pressed at times to figure out how to involve her more in the aspects of gardening that I love -- planting, growing from seed, transplanting, and anything requiring sharp-edged tools. So I asked Elizabeth down at the Sloat Garden Center  Read more...

Creepy Crawling Kids

August 07, 2008

The San Francisco Botanical Garden has some interesting classes for kids age 3 to 5 during the summer months. Every Tuesday at 11 a.m. the garden hosts "family adventures" that include story times, garden exploring and art creation. There's also an on-going exhibit by San Francisco artist Margo Bors exploring "creatures small: insects and plants" that looks like it's worth some quality time.  Read more...

Savvy classic: The herb garden

August 05, 2008

Dana and I both love to cool and we are slowly passing along some of our kitchen secrets to our daughter, Emmeline. One of those secrets is that I can't keep basil alive for the life of me. But I still try. And now Emme does, too. In a planter in the backyard, we installed some oregano, basil, mint and parsley and whenever we need something for a recipe, we send Emme out back to pick the correct  Read more...

Littlest Green Thumb: Garden Labs

June 27, 2008

I feel a little guilty for not writing about Paxton Gate earlier, considering it should be one of the top destinations for anyone with kids in the city. Who doesn't like to see a stuffed duck with an crocodile head? Or taxidermy mice arrayed in a variety of human-like poses and costumes? Adults usually squirm, but kids eat that stuff up. Big Time. Sadly, this post isn't about Paxton Gate. Well,  Read more...

Chopstick Bird Houses Make Takeout Fun

June 20, 2008

Well, maybe not as fun as the sweet deliciousness that is garlic noodles with pan-seared shrimp, but still pretty fun -- and a whole lot more eco-friendly. OK, I am blatantly stealing this -- untested -- from Apartment Therapy , because while the idea looks fantastic for adults, I'm guessing it will be even better for kids. But it basically involves building a simple bird house from those  Read more...
